I don't know about you guys, but I don't carry a wide-format inkjet printer with me when I'm out & about; I don't even keep it in the car. I don't even have a notebook PC with me. I'll give you that we sort of have a contact sheet & rather crappy loupe on board though (thinking in terms of negative film, naturally--for Mr. Watkins, the contact sheet WAS the final print.)

Ha ha ha, thanks for spotting that typo, Brian. I've now fixed it. I hope you'll continue visiting EtL in the future.

In a way, we do carry our darkroom with us (at least if shooting digital) as it's contained within the camera's circuitry. 12 mules + giant cameras + chemicals + tents or...a DSLR. It's an easy choice, right, Brian? ;)

Interesting article, although in 1961 why didn't he just use a car? :)
I have been following your posts in photo.net and on pentaxdslr.blogspot.com for some time and found you to be a wealth of knowledge. As with you, I am no longer to going to complain how heavy my K10d or K100d are. At least now, we don't have cart the whole darkroom with us to different locations.
It is my hope that as I progress in my photography skills, I will take the time to break a few rules also.
Thanks!

Mis, this is an excellent post where you did a very good introduction about this photographers' work.

While you spent a lot of time doing research into Carleton Watkin, I feel somehow connected to him.

Interesting that he broke the rule and still made a clear statment in his photography. Sometimes it is what the aim is that results in perfect photography instead of following blind rule.
